This epic day excursion crosses the spine of the High Atlas mountain range via the engineering marvel of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, reaching an elevation of 2,260 meters. The dramatic transition from fertile plains to moon-like desert ridges showcases dramatic geology. Descending toward the pre-Sahara, we reach Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most intact earthen clay citadel in North Africa. Constructed along the historical trans-Saharan trade route connecting Timbuktu to Marrakech, this maze of mud-brick kasbahs, watchtowers, and labyrinthine alleys has served as the filming backdrop for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. We then explore Ouarzazate, the 'Door of the Desert', visiting Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios before returning over the mountains in late afternoon golden light.
